Visit of Claudia Roth, Vice-Speaker of the German Parliament to Fiji

The Vice-Speaker of the German Parliament , Ms Claudia Roth (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN) together with two other MPs (Prof. Dr. Matthias Zimmer (CDU) and Dr Frithjof Schmidt (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) visited Kiribati and Fiji from 1-8 March 2019.The purposes of the visit was to gather firsthand information of the effects and challenges of climate change and to talk to government representatives, parliamentarians, civil society and faith based organisations about their experiences and possible measures to mitigate the effects of climate change. In Fiji, the delegation was able to visit the old and the new site of Vunidogoloa, a village that had to be relocated because of rising sea levels. Other topics that were covered during the trip included food security, drinking water and sanitation, waste management and domestic violence.The German Embassy would like thank the regional office of GIZ in Suva, the Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Kiribati, the New Zealand High Commission Tarawa, Kiribati, Australian High Commission, Kiribati, the South Pacific Marine Services in Tarawa and the Maritime Training Center (MTC) in Tarawa for their valuable support that made this visit a success.
