Germany remains popular tourist destination

From January to December 2017, international overnight stays in Germany have seen an increase of 3.6 percent compared to the previous year with 83.9 million registered stays, preliminary data from the German Statistical Office (destatis) shows.

Tourism from the United Kingdom and Ireland also increased during the same period: by 0.5 percent for the UK and 4.6 percent for Ireland.

The top 5 destinations measured in overnight stays were Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Cologne in that order.

Foreign overnight visitors have generated around €37 billion, making up for almost 30 percent of tourist consumption in Germany.

Incoming tourism constitutes a major economic factor for Germany which accounts for 3.9 percent of the country’s GDP according to the DIW (German Institute for Economic Research).
