The fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of East and West Germany 30 years ago were only made possible by the peaceful commitment of people to freedom, democracy and human rights – in East Germany but also in other countries.
Germany’s unification also brought down the “Iron Curtain” that had divided Europe for more than 40 years. That’s why it is a day on which we celebrate the courage with which people throughout Central and Eastern Europe fought for freedom and democracy.
German Unification was also Europe’s gift to Germany. It motivated us to drive forward Europe’s unification. And to strive for peace, freedom and human rights everywhere in the world.
