Welcome
Solar Power Supply for a Primary School on Niulakita
Through funding by the German Embassy, a Tuvaluan primary school on the small Island of Niulakita was supplied with electricity. Niulakita is only about 50 hectares in size and has 70 inhabitants. Located a 1.5-days' boat ride from the main island of Funafuti, it is very isolated. Around 30 students are attending the island´s primary school. According to the Millennium Development Goals Process Report of Tuvalu the number of students failing to complete the extended primary school education is rising.
Reason for that is the lack of access to computers and the internet, especially remote online tools that make learning easier and more accessible. The project, funded by the German Embassy, enabled the community to purchase solar panels for the primary school. These have been installed on the school’s roof, providing it with electricity. As a result, the students can benefit from digital content, access to the internet or movies. Furthermore, the electricity brings the benefit that older students can now be taught in the late afternoons as the lights can be switched on.
