Improving the Learning Environment at Uafato Primary School in Samoa

The German Embassy in Wellington has funded the rehabilitation of the Primary School in Uafato. Uafato is located at the end of a small access road in the Fagaloa Bay in the north-east of Upolu island. Its remote location makes the recruitment of teachers challenging, the decrepit condition of the existing structures made teaching and learning a hardship, resulting in a low attendance by pupils. With the embassy’s grant of approx. WST 30,000 the community was able to renovate the classrooms and the staff quarters including structural work, roofing, electricity and sanitary improvements. The new school facilities should inspire the students’ curiosity, encourage collaboration and nurture growth.

The project was inaugurated in November 2025 by the Embassy’s First Secretary Mr Patrick Dzierzon, the German Honorary Consul in Samoa Afoa Stefan Szegedi, Uafato’s Matai Fuimaono Vaitolo Ofoia and other dignitaries. The embassy has, over the years, supported more than ten Samoan schools with similar projects. Often the funds were modest, but the effect has been outstanding.
