Foreign Minister Wadephul met with Premier of Niue Hon. Dalton Tagelagi in Auckland 3 February 2026 to formally establish diplomatic relations between Niue and the Federal Republic of Germany to formally establish diplomatic relations between the two countries.
German Foreign Minister Dr. Johann Wadephul met with Premier of Niue Hon. Dalton Tagelagi in Auckland to formally establish diplomatic relations between the two countries. This came after the formal recognition of Niue as a sovereign state by the German Federal Cabinet on 7 January 2026. The recognition is part of a wider policy to strengthen relations with Pacific Island countries, especially those in the Pacific Islands Forum. It marks an important milestone in Germany’s engagement with the Pacific region and its commitment to advancing shared goals on climate resilience, sustainability and multilateral cooperation.
Germany’s diplomatic relations with Niue will be managed through the German Embassy in Wellington, reflecting a regional approach to Pacific diplomacy. As Germany has made climate action and sustainability key pillars of its foreign policy, the cooperation with Niue will place a strong emphasis on building climate resilience, supporting sustainable development and reinforcing regional capacities to adapt to environmental change.
